Henrik Stenson is going to skip next week’s BMW Championship, the third leg of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs, so he can rest his injured right knee.
“There’s a slight tear,” Stenson said of the meniscus. “It’s fine to hit golf shots, but walking is the hard part.”
Stenson is playing in the Deutsche Bank Championship, where he was runner-up last year, and starts the week at No. 21 in FedEx Cup points. The top 70 players get into the BMW Championship, meaning Stenson will qualify no matter what. However, by skipping the BMW Championship, which cuts the playoff field from 70 players to 30, Stenson is in danger of missing the Tour Championship.
Stenson, in his typical dry fashion, joked that all of his summer success, including winning his first major title, might have extended further back in time had he injured himself sooner.
“Given the summer I’ve had,” he joked, “maybe I should have torn it even earlier.”
