Despite rumblings that Tiger Woods would return next week at the Wells Fargo Championship, Friday’s deadline came and went without Woods committing to Quail Hollow.
However, he was in Las Vegas giving another clinic, this time at his annual Tiger Jam charity event.
While hitting balls on the range, Woods said, “I’m sick and tired of being on the sidelines. I want to start competing against these boys. I miss it.”
Woods is still trying to come back from two back surgeries last fall.
The news of Woods skipping Quail Hollow was not a surprise to Kym Hougham, the executive director of the Wells Fargo Championship.
“I have not talked to Mark [Steinberg] at all. I read the same thing everybody else did,” Hougham told GolfChannel.com. “I wasn’t surprised from all the reports of how long the recovery was going to be. But we didn’t plan to have Tiger anyway. There was a little buzz, but I don’t think we ever put a lot of stock into it. The field we ended up with is going to be very good.”
Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Adam Scott, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler are among the notables playing in Charlotte.
Last week on “Morning Drive,” Golf Channel insider Tim Rosaforte reported that Woods was targeting the Wells Fargo Championship and The Players for his return to competition for the first time in nine months.
Woods said earlier this week after playing five holes at the opening of his Bluejack National course in Houston that it was the first time he had played on a golf course since the Wyndham last August.
Also during the clinic, Woods said he’s carrying his driver 285-290 yards, which “is not that far compared to what I can do. I’ve got a lot more in the tank. … Right now, you see me just cruising, hitting shots. I’m not going to hurt myself out here.”
Woods will have a tough decision to make next week, too. The Players Championship follows Wells Fargo, and Woods is a two-time champion of the PGA Tour’s signature event.
